Depuis le 1er janvier 2016, tous les employeurs doivent faire bénéficier leurs salariés d’une complémentaire « frais de santé » qu’ils financent au moins pour moitié.
Cependant, l’employeur peut décider que les employés en contrat court, c’est-à-dire ceux ayant un contrat de travail d’une durée de 3 mois ou moins, ainsi que les employés à temps partiel qui travaillent au maximum 15 heures par semaine, n’adhéreront pas à la couverture santé instaurée dans l’entreprise. À la place, l’employeur leur versera une somme d’argent destinée au financement d’une complémentaire individuelle.
Initialement, cette mise en œuvre du « chèque santé » (aussi appelé « versement santé ») par la seule volonté de l’employeur n’était possible que jusqu’au 31 décembre 2016. Mais cette date limite a été supprimée par la loi de financement de la Sécurité sociale : cette option pour l’employeur est donc pérennisée.
